This is the first, crucial step to stop anxiety:
Understand what you can and can’t control.
Truth is, most of your body is not under your direct physical control.
That includes every area that is affected by your anxiety symptoms:
- Blood pressure
- Heart rate
- Digestive issues
- Brain fog
- Dizziness
- Etc…
You can tell your hand to touch your nose, but you can’t tell your heart to beat less fast.
This is all autonomic nervous system stuff.
For this reason, focussing on anything physical is a mistake.
Breathing techniques, yoga, supplements can all help…
BUT they will never solve the problem of anxiety.
So, if we exclude the physical we are left with the mental.
Your mind is far more under your control than your body.
However, the subtle linkages required to control the mind are not widely understood.
Here are the main ones:
- Self-Talk
- Imagery
- Memories
There are a few more but let’s not get too technical.
Now the interesting thing here is that any one of these can control the others.
You change your self-talk (somehow) and it triggers different mental imagery and memories.
Alternatively, if you are presented with a different collection of memories, you get different self-talk and mental imagery.
And so on…
But here’s the thing - do you know how to change your memories or mental imagery?
It’s not straightforward.
In fact it’s kind of technical.
On the other hand you DO control at least SOME of your self-talk.
There is one voice in your head that you can control.
There are some automatic thoughts too… but we’ll come to that tomorrow.
The control you have over your inner voice is the most profound power you have.
Bar none.
Use this voice wisely and your anxiety will diminish and die off.
Use it as you currently do and it’s likely to remain a thorn in your side.
Use it unwisely and the anxiety will spiral out of control.
After all, I bet you know exactly what you could say to yourself to make the anxiety much worse.
So you fight the negative thoughts as best you can.
There is a better way.
There is a wise way to use the voice in you head that you 100% control to silence negative thoughts and escape anxiety.
It’s counterintuitive, but when you get it right you become the master of your mind.
Keep an eye out for tomorrow’s email.
